Summary

Responsible and accountable as the competent professional authority for determination of Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program eligibility and certification based on nutritional risk. Provide nutrition assessment, education, referral, and care coordination services.

Essential Functions

  • Function as the competent professional authority for determination of WIC program eligibility and certification following assessment of individual anthropometric, biochemical and dietary data. 
  • Conduct the following assessments necessary for determining nutritional risk: diet history, measurement of length/height, weight and hemoglobin.  Nutrition Interview.
  • Tailor the WIC food package to best meet individual dietary needs of the participant. 
  • Coordinate, develop and assure nutrition education to all participants, both on an individual and group basis, while monitoring all materials used in the education program. 
  • Provide nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support that is responsive to the participant’s needs and interests 
  • Provide in-depth individual nutrition counseling and care plans as needed or requested by a participant. 
  • Promote and provide support to breastfeeding families and breastfeeding efforts. 
  • Provide referral of WIC participants to other sources of health care, as needed, including accurate documentation and follow-up of referrals. 
  • Maintain adequate and accurate participant records according to established policies and procedures. 
  • Ensure participant records are kept secure and confidential. 
  • Maintain daily statistics to assist in time studies, program and agency statistics. 
  • Provide program outreach information to agency staff, interested professionals, outside agencies, organizations and individuals. 
  • Develop needed program tools and plans and assist WIC Coordinator in development of the Nutrition Education Needs Assessment, Community Health Needs Assessment and the nutrition section of the local WIC grant application.
  • Represent the Family and Community Health Division by serving on SDHD and community agency committees and other groups by providing information about public health services and participating in the assessment of community needs to establish or revise public health programs, policies and procedures. 
  • Assume personal responsibility to keep informed of current changes and trends affecting nutritional needs/care and maintain competencies and skills. 
  • Participate in activities that support the planning and development of programs through work with other agencies to improve and/or expand services available to the public. 
  • Report cases of suspected abuse or neglect of children and adults to the proper authorities in accordance with department policy and state law.

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

  • Must have a high school diploma, or GED. Some post-secondary education or training in a health or nutrition field is recommended. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of related work in a professional setting.
  • Ability to successfully complete required trainings for WIC Competent Professional Authorities
  • CPR Certification required or be willing to attend training.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to obtain car insurance at agency-specified liability level.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs.
  •  Mandatory Child and Adult Reporter Training required or obtain within 6 months of employment.
