Responding to Disasters in Woodbury County

When disaster strikes—whether it’s a severe storm, a flood, a tornado, or another emergency—having a plan in place will help you act quickly and effectively. Woodbury County Emergency Management recommends the following best practices to guide you through the immediate moments after a disaster and the critical recovery period.

1. Stay Safe & Assess the Situation

  • Check for Immediate Danger: Look for and avoid downed power lines, gas leaks, broken glass, or other hazards. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, evacuate immediately and notify local authorities.
  • Treat Injuries: If you or others are injured, call 911 right away. Administer basic first aid if trained and it’s safe to do so.
  • Monitor Official Information: Listen to local news or Alerts from Woodbury County Emergency Management for updates on the situation, including warnings, evacuation orders, or road closures.

2. Follow Emergency Instructions

  • Evacuate if Directed: If authorities advise evacuation, leave promptly. Follow recommended routes to avoid closed roads or unsafe conditions. Communicate your departure and destination to someone outside the disaster area if possible.
  • Shelter-in-Place if Needed: During certain emergencies (e.g., tornado warnings or chemical spills), it may be safer to stay put. Use an interior room with as few doors and windows as possible, and follow official guidance.
  • Stay Connected: Keep your cell phone charged if you have power. Use text messaging to relieve network congestion, and only make calls if necessary.

3. Provide Aid & Support

  • Help Neighbors: If you can safely do so, check on neighbors—especially older adults, individuals with disabilities, or families with very young children.
  • Coordinate with Local Agencies: If you are part of a volunteer or community response team, follow your training and coordinate efforts with Woodbury County Emergency Management or other local authorities.

4. Document Damage & Losses

  • Record Damages: Take photographs or video of property damage. Keep receipts for any expenses related to temporary repairs or lodging. Report damages online or call 712-222-4421 to report damages.
  • Contact Your Insurance: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. Document conversations, claim numbers, and next steps in a dedicated notebook or digital file.

5. Stay Updated

  • Local Updates: Regularly check Woodbury County’s official website, social media channels, and local news for the latest information on disaster response, debris removal, and public safety updates.
  • Recovery Resources: The County may open shelters, distribution centers for food and water, or assistance offices. Look for announcements about how to apply for state and federal disaster aid if you are eligible.

6. Return Home Safely

  • Wait for the “All Clear”: Do not return to an evacuated area until authorities confirm it is safe.
  • Inspect Carefully: Check for structural damage, gas leaks, or electrical hazards before re-entering your home. If in doubt, consult professionals like electricians, plumbers, or building inspectors.
  • Clean Up Safely: Wear protective clothing (gloves, sturdy shoes, masks) and be mindful of hidden dangers such as sharp debris or contaminated water.

7. Begin the Recovery Process

  • Contact Local Organizations: Nonprofits, faith-based groups, and government agencies often provide aid with housing, food, clothing, and financial assistance. Seek help if you need it.
  • Reach Out for Emotional Support: Disasters can be traumatic. Crisis hotlines, mental health professionals, and faith-based or community support groups are available to help you and your family cope.
  • Reassess Your Preparedness: After the immediate response, take time to review your plan and supplies. Adjust your emergency plan based on what you learned.
